Nelson R. Rowell, a retired Master Chief Boatswain's Mate with the United States Coast Guard, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2007 at Spring Gate Nursing Home, in Memphis, TN.
Nicknamed "Pinky Gray," Rowell, 76, was a member of Leawood Baptist Church where he played in the orchestra. Retired 22 years from the Coast Guard, he owned and operated Memphis Mater, Mate and Pilot School, worked for River City Training Center, was a Mason, belonged to the Al Chymia Shrine and played in the brass band.
Born in Carrabelle to Nelson D. and Thelma Rowell, he is survived by his wife of 51 years, Amalie Forester Rowell; sons, James (Frieda) Rowell and Philip (Sherry) Rowell; granddaughters, Tiffany (Matt), Kate and Kristin; and great-grandchild, Natalie.
He was preceded in death by a brother Shellie Gray Rowell.
Service was held at Forest Hill Funeral Home East in Memphis, with burial in Forest Hill Cemetery East. Memorials may be sent to Leawood Baptist Church or the Alzheimer's Association. Forest Hill Funeral Home East handled arrangements.
